<image:title>About John - John O’Neill BSc (Hons), MSc (Fire Safety Engineering), MSc (Data Science), AIFireE Director / Founder</image:title>
<image:caption>John has over 9 years’ experience working as a fire engineering consultant and has developed bespoke performance-based fire strategies for buildings across the UK, Ireland and Australia. He is comfortable developing strategies for projects across a range of sectors and always aims to strike a balance between ensuring that architectural aspirations are met while achieving a high level of fire safety. While John is highly experienced in the application of baseline design guidance to ensure fire strategies meet prescriptive requirements, he is also experienced in the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics models using the most up to date industry software to facilitate performance based design approaches. He has used CFD to obtain approvals for designs across residential, office and warehouse schemes. He has also developed complex evacuation models for office and stadium projects. With a separate master’s degree in data science, John’s research interests lean towards machine learning with a specific focus on application of supervised learning techniques to various fire related data sets. Previous Employment - Astute Fire, Olsson Fire and Risk (Australia), Michael Slattery Associates (Ireland), Hoare Lea Selected Career Episodes Horsham Blue Light Centre This Fire Station in West Sussex is also designed as a learning and development centre for the Fire Service. Of note was the design for the Live Fire training facility, the purpose of which was to provide supervised training for fire service personnel by replicating real world firefighting scenarios. Development of the fire strategy necessitated the consideration of repeated heating and cooling of “burn rooms” within the training building and development of an outline hazard analysis highlighting operational items that the end user should factor into the management plan. JD Sports, DC2 The JD sports DC2 storage facility in Kingsway provided a unique challenge from a fire strategy perspective as it was undergoing alterations in response to the increased Health & Safety demands brought on by the Covid 19 Pandemic. The design which also included high racked storage and multiple open mezzanine floors required the development of a smoke modelling analysis to demonstrate the internal fit out could adequately accommodate means of escape. Wework - Various John has had the opportunity to work on a number of Wework office fit outs across London and Sydney Australia. Development of the strategies for these densely populated collaborative spaces often required creative thinking to develop bespoke fire strategies with a focus on means of escape. Consistent stakeholder engagement was required to ensure the Wework vision was maintained while also maintaining a high standard of life safety. Other Notable Experience Residential – 6 Merchant Square, Lewisham Gateway. Thornton Park, Clapham. Crown House Barking. Commercial Office – Wework: Aldwych House and 12 Hammersmith Grove. <image:caption>Sam is a Chartered Building Engineer, specialising in fire engineering, with over 18 years’ experience. He specialises in fire safety engineering for building design and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modelling. Sam has considerable experience of leading the fire engineering design on a large number of varied projects both internationally and across the UK. These include residential buildings, large scale hotels, transport infrastructure, warehouses and healthcare facilities. In previous appointments, Sam has been an influential figure involved in the advancement of CFD modelling and bespoke fire engineering design capabilities. He has also acted as an expert witness in relation to CFD modelling of smoke using Fire Dynamics Simulator. His passion lies in applying his detailed technical knowledge of CFD modelling and other fire engineering calculation techniques to develop unique and bespoke fire strategy solutions. Sam is also regularly appointed to undertake peer reviews of fire strategies on behalf of Building Control bodies who do not have this capability in-house. As an expert witness, Sam has been subject to cross examination by a QC in a formal adjudication setting. Previous Employment - Astute Fire (Founder), WSP, Hoare Lea, Promat Selected Career Episodes Goldman Sachs - 70 Farringdon Road Lead fire engineer from planning to completion on a new global headquarters for Goldman Sachs. The client had high aesthetic standards and specific operational requirements. This required the development of a bespoke fire strategy to meet these high ambitions including several CFD modelling studies and computational evacuation modelling studies. New Build Amazon Warehouses During his tenure at Astute Fire, Sam was instrumental in making Astute Fire one of Amazons “fire engineers of choice”, developing fire strategies for over ten large new build facilities. These facilities required a bespoke approach due to their large size, specific operational requirements, high-tech sortation systems and fast paced construction programs. Sam maintained close working relationships with the relevant client representatives, design teams and approving authorities his strategies were quickly designed and delays were avoided. Passive Fire Protection Dispute, Hospital, England Sam was instructed on behalf of a project company in an adjudication in relation to a multi-million pound dispute relating to fire stopping and fire compartmentation at a recently constructed hospital. Sam was required to provide comment on CFD modelling evidence used in the case as well as to undertake multiple CFD modelling studies as part of a comparative “monte carlo assessment” of safety levels. Thomas is highly competent in a variety of fire engineering skills, such as evacuation and CFD Modelling and Fire Dynamics calculations, and has both led and assisted on a variety of projects throughout the UK and internationally. Previous Employment - Astute Fire (Founder), WSP, Hoare Lea Selected Career Episodes The News Building, Shard Quarter, London The Building involved the fit out of the 18 storey new build office for News UK within the Shard Quarter at London Bridge. As part of the design, there was a desire to increase internal circulation between levels by the use of accommodation stairs. This was achieved through the development of a bespoke fire safety strategy to allow openings in compartment floor and therefore giving greater architectural freedom to the design of the accommodation stairs. Al Ain Stadium, Abu Dhabi The scheme included a new 25,000 seat football stadium, commercial properties, retail and residential areas for the Crown Prince Court (CPC). The fire engineering role was to guide the design team through the development review process and to assist in the detailed design for each element of the scheme. This involved undertaking the fire engineering design, and seeking to achieve agreement with the Statutory Authorities in Al Ain. ExCel Exhibition Centre – Phase 2, London The Phase 2 works added an additional 36,000m2 of hall space to the existing building. Thomas’ role included undertaking evacuation modelling and desktop studies to achieve approval of extended travel distances.
